Attendance Monitoring

ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½, Luton campus

Why attendance matters

At the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½, we expect all students to attend their scheduled classes and learning activities. Regular attendance supports your academic progress, helps you stay engaged with your course, and ensures you can access the guidance and support you need to succeed.

Attendance is an important part of your responsibility as a student and plays a key role in helping you make the most of your university experience.

Attending taught sessions, such as lectures, seminars, workshops and practical classes, enables you to:

  • Engage fully with course content and learning objectives
  • Develop subject knowledge and academic skills
  • Participate in discussions, group work and practical activities
  • Receive advice, feedback and clarification from academic staff
  • Prepare effectively for assessments and meet course requirements

While learning materials and online resources can support your studies, they do not replace the value of active participation in scheduled teaching and learning activities.

Attendance monitoring also helps the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ meet its obligations to external organisations.

For many students, attendance information may be shared with organisations such as the Student Loans Company (SLC) to confirm ongoing engagement with their course.

For international students, maintaining regular attendance is a condition of holding a Student visa. The ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ is required to monitor attendance and report concerns to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) in line with visa sponsorship duties. Poor or inconsistent attendance may therefore have implications for visa status.

It is important that you understand and meet any attendance requirements associated with your course, funding or visa.

The ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ monitors attendance to help us understand how students are engaging with their studies. Attendance monitoring enables us to:

  • Identify students who may be experiencing academic, personal or wellbeing difficulties
  • Make early contact where there are concerns about engagement
  • Offer appropriate advice, guidance or referral to support services

Our approach to attendance monitoring is intended to be supportive. It helps us ensure that students are aware of available support and can access help at an early stage.

How do we define attendance and engagement?

Recording attendance process using QR scanning

The ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ uses a QR‑based attendance system that is integrated with the timetabling platform. This is a quick and secure way to record your attendance during scheduled teaching sessions.

For each class:

  • Teaching staff generate a session‑specific QR code
  • Students scan the code using their mobile device
  • Attendance is recorded securely and in real time

You will normally be asked to scan the QR code at the start of the session to confirm your attendance.

About the Student Attendance Tracking Team

The Student Attendance Monitoring Team manages the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½â€™s attendance monitoring processes across all courses. The team ensures that attendance is recorded accurately and used appropriately to support student engagement and academic progress.

Working closely with academic Schools and professional services, the team monitors attendance patterns and follows up where there are concerns about engagement. This may include contacting students and signposting them to relevant academic or wellbeing support where needed.

The team also ensures that attendance monitoring meets ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ policy and external requirements, including those of the Student Loans Company and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). This includes working with the International Office in relation to students who hold a Student visa.
