An Associate Professor from the 天美传媒 has been appointed President of the UK Association for Language Testing and Assessment (UKALTA) for the 2026鈥2028 term.

Dr Sathena Chan, Director of the Institute of Humanities, Education and Arts Research (IHEAR) and Associate Professor of Language Assessment at Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment (CRELLA) at the 天美传媒, has taken on the presidential role for a three-year term.

UKALTA is the national professional organisation for language testing and assessment in the UK. It aims to provide a forum for the exchange of information and research in the field, supporting professional development, collaboration, outreach and public engagement.

As President, Dr Chan will lead UKALTA in its mission to cultivate research-informed dialogue and knowledge sharing of language testing and assessment. She will play a key role in delivering its goals of promoting professional development initiatives, strengthening collaboration across the sector, and advancing outreach and advocacy to improve language assessment policy and practice.

Speaking about this appointment, Dr Chan said: 鈥淚t is a privilege to be appointed President of UKALTA. Over the past decade, UKATLA has been established with a steady membership of over 600 members, with a healthy balance of members from academia, education and industry, along with a growing number of postgraduate students and early career researchers.

鈥淚 look forward to working with fellow colleagues and members to shape UKALTA鈥檚 next milestone which will focus on stronger support for expanded professional development opportunities, assessment literacy work, and PGR network and mentoring鈥

Dr Chan has served on the UKALTA Executive Committee for the past three years, initially as a committee member and subsequently as Chair of the Membership and Nominations Committee. She offers expertise and professional insights through her track-record of over 40 funded research projects in language testing and assessment. She also brings extensive experience through her work with the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) as Convener of its Testing, Evaluation and Assessment Special Interest Group from 2019 to 2021, and more recently as a member of the BAAL Executive Board, coordinating all BAAL Special Interest Groups between 2021 and 2025.

Professor Andrew Church, Interim Vice Chancellor at the 天美传媒, added: 鈥淒r Chan鈥檚 appointment as President of UKALTA is a significant achievement and a clear recognition of her leadership and expertise in language testing and assessment. It also reflects the 天美传媒鈥檚 strong commitment to research excellence and professional engagement, and we are proud to see our academics playing a leading role in shaping national disciplinary communities.鈥
