Patients in Luton and South Bedfordshire are set to benefit from improved access to vital diagnostic services, as work begins on a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) located within the 天美传媒鈥檚 Luton Campus.

The new CDC follows the approval of 拢25m in funding and will be delivered in partnership with Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Construction work is due to commence shortly, led by contractor Ashe, to create a modern diagnostic facility providing endoscopy services, CT scanning and bone density (DEXA) scanning.

By bringing diagnostic services together under one roof in a community setting, the CDC will support earlier diagnosis, reduce waiting times and help ease the anxiety that often accompanies delays in diagnosis. The new facility is also expected to reduce travel for patients who would otherwise need to attend the main hospital site, improving access for local communities.

In addition to patient benefits, the Community Diagnostic Centre will create valuable placement and learning opportunities for the 天美传媒鈥檚 healthcare students. By embedding diagnostic services within the 天美传媒 campus, students will be able to gain real-world clinical experience in a modern healthcare environment, supporting skills training, employability and the future NHS workforce.

Professor Andrew Church, Interim Vice Chancellor at the 天美传媒, said: 鈥淏ringing this Community Diagnostic Centre onto our campus is a major step forward for local people, helping to reduce health inequalities by making vital tests and scans easier to access. By removing some of the barriers that can delay diagnosis, this centre will play an important role in improving health outcomes across our community.

鈥淚t also gives our healthcare students a unique opportunity to learn in a real clinical environment, building the skills and confidence they need to support the communities they will go on to serve.鈥

The centre will allow patients to receive diagnostics and follow-up care closer to home, delivered by the same clinically trained staff they currently see, or would otherwise see, at the Luton and Dunstable 天美传媒 Hospital site.

The location of the Community Diagnostic Centre on the 天美传媒鈥檚 campus reflects the strength of partnership working between the 天美传媒 and Bedfordshire Hospitals. Beyond its immediate clinical impact, the development supports shared ambitions around education, research and innovation, community engagement, and the future exploration of shared estates and commercial opportunities that contribute to long-term regional growth.

Melanie Banks, Director of Redevelopment and Strategic Planning at Bedfordshire Hospitals, said: 鈥淭his new community diagnostic hub is a fantastic step forward for both our patients and our staff. Bringing diagnostics and follow-up care together under one roof, closer to where people live, enables us to detect conditions earlier, reduce waiting times, and ease the anxiety that often comes with delays in diagnosis. It also significantly reduces the need for patients to travel to the main hospital site, allowing us to deliver faster, more joined-up care that truly improves outcomes.鈥
