Applying for a Student Visa in the UK

This section is for both students requiring a visa extension to complete their current course and students due to start a new course.

Student Visa Route

If your main purpose for remaining in the UK is study for more than 6 months, you will need to apply for a Student Route visa. There are circumstances when you may be able to make your student visa application in the UK.

You must be making your visa application no more than three months before the start date on your Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) and the gap between the end of your current leave and the start of your new course (as stated on your CAS) must not be more than 28 days.

You will need to meet academic progression requirements and there is a time limit which applies to students on courses at or below degree level.

You will not be able to apply from the UK if you hold a Visitor or Short-term Student visa amongst others.

For full details of eligibility, see

Detailed information about dependants is available at

All student’s wishing to apply for a student route visa, must obtain a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½. Your CAS document will contain a CAS number which you will use to make your visa application.

  • New students will need to obtain this from our International Admissions Team.
  • Continuing ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ students, who may need to extend their visa to resit an assessment or retake a module, will need to request a CAS from the Visa & Immigration Advisory team – requests must be submitted online at beds.ac.uk/cas Please note, the CAS request cannot be submitted any earlier than 8 weeks before your visa expiry date. Any requests received too early are automatically cancelled. Please look at our CAS Application process time frame for more information.

You will need to apply online and pay an application fee and the

You will need an ATAS certificate if required and this will need to be prepared in advance of your application.

Have your academic qualifications and English qualifications ready in case they are required.

If you have been in the UK with a valid visa for 12 months or more, you will not have to prove you have enough money to support yourself in the UK.

For continuing students who need a visa extension to complete their existing course - in order to establish if you are satisfactorily progressing on your course we will need to consider the following:

  • Results for your units so far
  • Any Course transfers
  • Overall qualification
  • Any non-attempts at any assignment or exam (G Grades)
  • Your attendance so far on the course – this is very important, poor attendance could mean that your CAS application is refused.
  • Any mitigating circumstances
  • Any academic appeals
  • Any academic concerns/suspected plagiarism
  • Any breach of study conditions or visa conditions
  • Any other issue we think may have hindered your progress

If we feel it necessary, we will conduct an interview with you as part of the CAS assessment process.

If you are a continuing student and you are contacted by UKVI inviting you to an interview, please email a copy of the interview invitation communication you receive to visaadvice@beds.ac.uk without delay.

An International Student Advisor will contact you to discuss this and provide some guidance.

If you do not meet the exemption for the financial requirement, you will need to provide a copy of the bank document you intend to submit with your visa application so that we can assess them as part of the CAS assessment process.

Please note, every CAS request will be assessed individually on a case by case basis. If we feel that there are any other factors which may affect your ability to follow your course of study, or you have breached any university or UKVI regulations, the university reserves the right to refuse you a CAS.

Once you have completed the application with UKVI, continuing students should submit documents confirming you have made the application to visamonitoring@beds.ac.uk

You will be able to keep your passport whilst your application is being decided by UKVI. If you travel outside the UK, your visa application will be treated as being withdrawn. All travel should be avoided. If you need to travel at short notice due to an emergency, while your application is still pending at the Home Office, you should email visaadvice@beds.ac.uk to discuss your options.

If your visa application is successful, you will receive an email from the Home Office confirming the visa has been granted and its duration. To view your eVisa, you will need to have a UKVI account.

Find out

Once you have created your UKVI account, you will be able to generate a share code. You will need to send this to the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ by emailing prearrival@beds.ac.uk if you are a new student or visamonitoring@beds.ac.uk if you are a continuing student. Ensure that you check all the details on your eVisa and if you think there is an error, please tell us in your email.

If your application has been refused or returned as invalid, you should send a copy to visamonitoring@beds.ac.uk at the earliest opportunity. Please make sure you provide your name and student number in the subject heading of the email.

Whether you are a new or continuing student of ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ you should urgently seek immigration advice from us by emailing visaadvice@beds.ac.uk

We can then make an appointment with you to discuss it in detail and look at your options and the implications for your immigration status.

You may, at your own risk, register with the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ before obtaining a decision concerning your visa application. This is on the basis of having applied for a visa under our sponsorship,

You will need to prove that you have applied for your visa whilst you had valid leave to remain. The documents the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ accepts as valid proof of an in-time Student visa application consists of:

  1. A copy of your application Documents Checklist and;
  2. Your transaction confirmation email, showing that you have paid for your visa application
    and;
  3. Your Immigration Health Surcharge payment confirmation email
    and;
  4. Appointment Confirmation page with QR code or email to confirm to submit documents via IDV App
  5. Copy of passport and previous visa

The first three documents listed above must be dated before your previous visa expired to constitute evidence of an in-time application.

You will be required to agree to certain conditions in order to be registered at the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ before you obtain your visa and you must keep the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ updated with the progress of your application.

If you do decide to register on the basis of having a visa application pending, but your application for a visa is refused, you could be removed from the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ register, may have to return to your home country, and you may not be eligible for a full refund.
