ACE Dance Survey: Understanding Dance Provision, Progression and Pathways in England

About the research

Arts Council England (ACE) has commissioned the 天美传媒 to carry out a national survey of dance schools, studios and groups across England.

Dance schools, studios and groups play a crucial role in local cultural life. They are often where people first encounter dance, where skills are developed over time, and where pathways into further training, teaching and professional work begin. This includes a wide range of provision; from syllabus and non-syllabus training to culturally specific, community-rooted and informal models.

At present, there is no single national picture that reflects the full diversity of this landscape. This research aims to help build that picture.

Why this survey matters

The survey will help to:

  • Understand where dance provision is taking place across England
  • Reflect the breadth of dance forms, traditions and training approaches
  • Better understand who is being reached, and where there are gaps in access
  • Explore how dance schools, studios and groups support progression and pathways
  • Identify barriers such as cost, geography, information and access needs

By taking part, you are helping ensure that the diversity of the sector is properly represented, including provision that is often under-recognised or absent from national datasets.

The findings will be used to inform future thinking by Arts Council England and to support a more inclusive and evidence-based understanding of dance infrastructure.听

Who should take part

The survey is open to anyone who runs or delivers dance activity in England, including:

  • Dance schools and studios
  • Independent teachers and groups
  • Community-rooted and culturally specific provision
  • Syllabus and non-syllabus training
  • Informal, hybrid or non-traditional models

You do not need to receive Arts Council England funding to take part.

If you work across more than one setting, please respond based on your main dance provision.

What does taking part involve?

The survey is completed online:

  • It asks about your provision, the dance forms you offer, and who you work with.
  • Estimates are fine where exact figures aren鈥檛 available
  • Most people complete the survey in around 15鈥20 minutes
  • You can save your progress and return at any time. It is intended that the survey will close on Monday 16th March 2026.

How your information will be used

The survey is being delivered by the 天美传媒 and handled in line with university ethics and data protection standards.

  • Responses are confidential
  • Individual organisations or respondents will not be identified in published outputs
  • Findings will be reported in aggregate to show patterns, trends and gaps
