About the course
ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ the latest developments in legal practice alongside gaining valuable skills in financial management. This course is your first step to qualifying as a solicitor or progressing to a career at the Bar. It also prepares you for roles in the financial and commercial sector, developing your understanding of the principles that underlie the preparation, analysis and interpretation of financial information.
Course accreditation

All our LLB courses cover the Foundation of Legal Knowledge subjects and satisfy the requirements set by the Bar Standards Board for the academic component of Bar training. Upon successfully completing the LLB with a minimum grade of 2:ii, graduates who wish to qualify as barristers will be able to progress on to the Bar training course.

This course has the option to be taken over four years which includes a year placement in industry. Undertaking a year in industry has many benefits. You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.

Whether you’re returning to learning and require additional help and support to up-skill, or if you didn’t quite meet the grades to pursue an Undergraduate course, our Degrees with Foundation Year provide a fantastic entry route for you to work towards a degree level qualification.
With our guidance and support you’ll get up to speed within one year, and will be ready to seamlessly progress on to undergraduate study at Bedfordshire.
The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree.
This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. You will need to successfully complete the Foundation Year to progress on to the first year of your bachelor’s degree.

Year 1
Introduction to economics and finance – Explore micro-economics, macro-economics and key finance principles. Criminal law – Overview the criminal process in England and Wales and the governing principles of individual and corporate criminal liability. Contract law – Understand legal principles relating to the formation of contracts, their validity, interpretation, performance and remedies for breach. English legal system – Learn to use sources of legal information to support a sound and well–reasoned legal argument. Academic and legal skills – Understand client management, problem–solving, negotiation, and advanced oral and written communication skills.
Year 2
Financial theory and practice – Gain understanding about contemporary financial instruments and markets. Land law – Explore property and ownership rights in relation to land and the impact these rights have on third parties. Law of tort – Understand civil rights and liabilities and/or other civil law matters. Constitutional and administrative law – In-depth grounding in the constitutional and administrative dimensions of public law.
Year 3
Financial management – Gain skills to maximise shareholder wealth through efficient resource allocation. Equity and trusts – Introduction to equitable jurisdiction with a focus on creation, purpose and enforcement of trusts. Dissertation – Identify a current issue of public interest for in-depth legal analysis and produce legal writing to critically discuss the topic. Company law – Understand the functions of a company when running a business and of the legal framework which regulates companies. Fundamentals of EU law – Understand the main legal principles in the European Union.

The LLB Law with Financial Management programme has been carefully designed to develop a wide range of academic legal and practical skills via a varied portfolio of assessment methods. A developing range of assessments will enable you to grow in confidence and demonstrate your acquisition of knowledge and skills.
The assessment methods used across the course include:
- Written assignments: These may vary from essays and reports to more in-depth research work on broader topics. These assessments will test your ability to analyse an issue, to conduct research, to collect relevant materials, to assess the quality of the materials and to synthesise them into a scholarly answer.
- Examinations: These will cover a range of multiple choice examinations through to in-class tests and essay-based exams. The aim of exams is to test your ability to convey your understanding of a topic and to demonstrate your skills of analysis and evaluation in a time sensitive manner.
- Oral presentations: These presentations demonstrate verbal and presentational skills in communicating information to others. Moot presentations will test your ability to carry out research and present your findings in a persuasive and authoritative manner. They will also introduce the practical skills of court etiquette and procedure.
- Problem questions and case studies: These will allow you to apply your legal or financial knowledge to a real-life scenario.
- Dissertation: This allows you to undertake a complex research project and communicate knowledge findings and recommendations in your final year on the course
The assessments will develop incrementally across the course and allow you to gain skills and acquire knowledge receive feedback and grow, thus allowing you to implement this knowledge and feedback into subsequent assessments. At the end of the course, completion of the assessments will demonstrate your ability to apply, analyse and evaluate current legal and financial knowledge, and communicate this in both written and presentational formats. Thus you will be able to demonstrate a range of transferable skills relevant to your professional employability.
