What will you study?
ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ing our Information Technology Management for Business BSc (Hons) course is designed to address the rapidly changing technological business environment and to equip you with the technical and soft skills needed for career opportunities in various organisational settings. Your learning journey will begin in Year 1, where you will learn about the transformative nature of business through units such as Data Centric Organisations to develop an awareness of how data is being created and used in a business decision context and understand the evolution of data analytics. Computer systems are an integral part of our daily life, and in Computer Systems Structure you will learn about the organisation of data and computer architecture offering fundamental grounding in computing. You will use various programming languages and architectures that are contextualised during the course with lab-based practical sessions that will provide you with hands-on experience.
Building on the foundation of your first year, Year 2 will develop your understanding the current business and management complexities in units such as Systems Development and Modern Database Practices which appreciates the need for the deployment of real-world information systems that comprise data centric (database) systems. This includes the practical creation and interrogation of RDBMS databases using Structured Query Language (SQL). In Managing Business Complexity, you will also work with real companies on consultancy projects where you will apply the knowledge and skills gained during previous units into practice. Similarly, in Business Intelligence, you will analyse the challenges facing a business and how agility and innovation can support evidence-based decisions through data.
You will work with a live business case by identifying their data needs and providing them with effective strategies. Furthermore, you will evaluate sources of threats and strategies to prevent and protect against cyberattacks in our Cyber Defence and Automation units. In your final year, you will design business solutions through units such as Building Business Agility which looks at the increase reliance and insights derived from data analytics resulting in data centric organisations seeking to be adaptive and responsive. You will develop an understanding of agile business process models and link them to innovation and critically evaluate business processes to develop risk averse decisions that will lead to transformational change. In Data Driven Business, you will gain in-depth knowledge on the decision-making process exploring the uses of data information and tools and techniques within various context of business functions.
You build an awareness of the current and future trends related to various aspects of data and explore and understand the legal and ethical responsibilities associated with the collection, organisation, use, and analysis of data in the business context. Strategic Leadership will then explore the strategic role of technology in making strategic-level choices that enables strategy evaluation and implementation in business. You will use problem-solving strategies, methods and techniques to define, investigate and critically evaluate problems using information and data in complex and interrelated contexts. Finally, our Business Project unit establishes a framework for conducting academic research project leading to technology-based solutions for business problems informing an in-depth understanding and learning of the practical use of data in business and how it shapes critical business decisions.
How will you be assessed?
Assessment takes a variety of forms, including reports, portfolios, individual and collaborative tasks (individually assessed), research proposals, poster presentations, and exams. Many of the assessments tend to be focused on employability thus tend to be based on live businesses, studies, project work, and other employability focused activities.
Most units include elements of individual and group work to reflect the type of work undertaken in business and management. Assessment focuses on tasks that develop vocational skills, underpinned by subject knowledge, requiring higher levels of cognition in the later years of the course. Assessment becomes more nuanced and more demanding in Levels 5 & 6 with the expectation that students will be increasingly able to create their own subject specific knowledge.
Careers
The portfolio of skills you develop during the course will open opportunities for you to gain employment in business areas that require data/technology solutions such as IT management or digital marketing. The course also provides a thorough grounding in IT and data-analysis skills developing you to become a business manager who is able to make evidence based decisions on IT resource acquisitions and provide business solutions using a wide range of IT.
You also develop the skills required for lifelong learning meaning you are well prepared to keep up with the ever-evolving field of business information technology and ensure your future employability.
