• Set yourself targets
  Make sure to have a clear understanding of what you want to get out of your apprenticeship from the very beginning. Reading up on the different career options open to you (and the skills & qualifications you’ll need for each) is a good place to start.
• Listen and learn
  You’ll learn faster by tapping into your colleagues’ experience and know-how. Listen, observe and ask plenty of questions. Similarly, don’t be afraid to ask for advice and to accept feedback on your performance where it’s offered.
• Network
  The more people you meet and speak to, the more opportunities you’ll have to learn – it really is that simple. So get networking. First impressions are important and having someone to introduce you to people can make the process run that little bit smoother.
• Don’t limit yourself
  As you acclimatise to the role there’s nothing to stop you from branching out and getting exposure to different sides of the industry. Figuring out the kind of work you’re best suited to is all part of the process, so keep an open mind.
• Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
  By the same token, don’t be afraid to throw your hat in the ring as opportunities present themselves. As a newcomer to the profession there’s greater license to experiment and try new things. It’s natural to make a few mistakes along the way.

Final thought – While each apprenticeship scheme is different, the formula for success if usually quite simple. The key ingredients are enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard and get stuck in.
